Horizontal vs Vertical Progress (and why it matters)

Horizontal progress is "copy/paste success." Vertical progress is "create a new capability." Both are real. The mistake is pretending they're the same thing.

Globalization is a strong example of horizontal progress: same tools, same incentives, bigger map. It can raise living standards massively without changing what humans can fundamentally do.

Vertical progress shows up as new primitives: cheaper compute, new networks, new interfaces, new trust mechanisms. Primitives don't just improve efficiency; they change the design space. They turn "nice idea" into "inevitable product."

Actionable lens: when evaluating a trend, ask whether it's scaling an existing playbook or making a new playbook possible. If it's horizontal, compete on execution and distribution. If it's vertical, compete on insight and timing.
