Horizontal progress is "copy/paste success." Vertical progress is "create a new capability." Both are real. The mistake is pretending they're the same thing.
Globalization is a strong example of horizontal progress: same tools, same incentives, bigger map. It can raise living standards massively without changing what humans can fundamentally do.
Vertical progress shows up as new primitives: cheaper compute, new networks, new interfaces, new trust mechanisms. Primitives change the design space, not only the efficiency of the old one. They turn "nice idea" into "inevitable product."
Actionable lens: when evaluating a trend, ask whether it's scaling an existing playbook or making a new playbook possible. If it's horizontal, compete on execution and distribution. If it's vertical, compete on insight and timing.
